Important Life Lessons for Every Child from Swami Vivekananda
Here are some important life lessons or teachings by Swami Vivekananda that every child must be taught.
- Practice honesty – Teach children that it is important to tell the truth and face the consequences for their actions. Being honest and true to yourself and others, despite the outcome, is an important part of being a successful individual.
- Persist and Focus on the goal – Children should be made to understand that no matter how difficult a task is if they put their heart and mind to it, they will complete it successfully. To quote Swami Vivekananda, “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”
- Believe in yourself– Many times people may not be willing to listen or agree with you even when you speak the truth. During such times, it is very important to stick to what you believe.
- Do not discriminate – Show your children how the character of a person is defined by his actions and not by his caste, religion or economic status. Swami Vivekananda said that “the greatest religion is to be true to your own nature.” Teach children to value and respect people based on their actions and thoughts.
- Face your problems with courage – Help children understand that everyone faces troubles in life, no matter where they go or what they do and running away never solves any problems. Teach them that they should face troubles and deal with them. Whether in school, work or personal life, face adversity with courage and deal with them instead of avoiding them.
- Test before you Trust – Show your children how not to trust anything or anyone blindly or take anything at face value. Teach them to study and verify and think before accepting them as the truth. Encourage your children to always try to understand the meaning behind what anyone says and not take everything for granted.
- Introspect and Reflect – Vivekananda said “Talk to yourself once in a day…. Otherwise, you may miss meeting an excellent person in this world.” Teach children to look into themselves, to introspect and reflect on their actions every day.
- Think Positive, Be pure and Do Good – Encourage children to think positive. Quote Swami Vivekananda, who said, “Whatever you think, that you will be”. Teach children to help others always without the expectation of getting something in return. Help children identify any negative influences on the body or mind and to keep away from them.
- Take risks and learn from failure – Swami Vivekananda famously said, “Take risks in your life. If you win; you may lead. If you lose; you may guide.” Help children learn to assess and take risks and learn from experiences – both wins and losses.
- Never stop learning – Parents should understand that skill is what children need. Encourage your children to take part in extracurricular activities, leadership programs, learn something new and never stop.
Teach your children about these apt philosophies that are very much essential in today’s world!
